Right from the Start is an attachment-based course for parents of infants 0-1 year old. Dr. Alison Niccols of the Infant-Parent Program, Chedoke Child and Family Centre, and her colleagues, have developed this 8-session parenting course, to enhance caregiver skills in reading infant cues and responding sensitively. The course uses attachment theory as a framework and active adult learning principles. Right from the Start is appropriate for parents of all infants under 1, and especially those at risk for social, emotional, behavioural and/or developmental difficulties. There is no cost for parents to participate and transportation and child care is provided as needed.

In the fall of 2004, The Surrey Make Children First Committee set Infant Mental Health and Parent/Infant Attachment as priority areas for funding development. A proposal by Peace Arch Community Services to bring Dr. Niccols' team to Surrey was accepted by Success By 6 and pilot project funding for facilitator training was provided. In February 2005, forty facilitators from a variety of community agencies interested in promoting parent/infant attachment principles within Surrey were trained to facilitate parent groups.
